BSF Jawan Purnam Kumar Shaw Returned to India After Pakistan Custody Since April 23

A Border Security Force (BSF) jawan who had been in the custody of Pakistan Rangers since April 23 was safely returned to India on Wednesday. The jawan, identified as Constable Purnam Kumar Shaw of the 182nd Battalion, was handed over at around 10:30 am at the Joint Check Post in Attari, Amritsar, in a peaceful exchange following established protocols.

According to a statement released by the BSF, Shaw had inadvertently crossed the International Border near Ferozepur, Punjab, while on duty. He was in uniform and carrying his service rifle when he reportedly moved toward a shaded area near the border fence to rest and unknowingly stepped into Pakistani territory. He was then detained by the Pakistan Rangers.

Following weeks of coordination between the two sides, Shaw was released and returned to Indian custody. He is currently being debriefed by security officials.

The BSF confirmed the return in an official statement. “Today BSF Jawan Purnam Kumar Shaw, who had been in the custody of Pakistan Rangers since 23 April 2025, was handed over to India at about 1030 hours through the Joint Check Post Attari, Amritsar. The handover was conducted peacefully and in accordance with established protocols.”
