The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI-M] has said that the Modi government cannot be called a fascist regime. In its draft political resolution, the party stated that while the government shows “neo-fascist characteristics,” it does not fully fit the definition of fascism.

“We are not saying that the Modi government is a fascist or neo-fascist government. Nor are we characterizing the Indian State as a neo-fascist State,” the document said.

The draft resolution has been shared with state units ahead of the party congress in April, which will be held in Madurai. The CPI-M argues that after ten years of BJP rule, power is concentrated in the hands of the BJP-RSS, leading to “neo-fascist characteristics.”

This position is different from other Left parties. The Communist Party of India (CPI) directly calls the Modi government a fascist regime, while the CPI (Marxist-Leninist) [CPI-ML] claims “fascism has already arrived in India.”

CPI Kerala secretary Binoy Viswam criticized the CPI-M’s stance. “The Modi government led by the RSS is a fascist government. The RSS is a complete fascist organization. The CPI-M will have to change its stand,” he said.

The Congress party has accused the CPI-M of being “soft” on the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
